Anika’s Heart

Anika is the daughter of one of my closest friends, KN. She is a very sweet, bright and lovable child but she has a broken heart. Because of some heart murmur irregularity noticed by her pediatrician when she was 8 months old, her parents were told to consult with a cardiologist. After an Echocardiogram or 2d echo, she was diagnosed at the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) to be suffering from a Congenital Heart Defect

Her 2d echo results showed that she has a Single Ventricle defect (basically half a heart), a rare type of CHD (Congenital Heart Defect) with other heart defects – Single Ventricle, Dextrocardia, Pulmonary Valve Atresia and Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).

It is quite heartbreaking to learn that such a beautiful child like Anika has an imperfect heart. I feel for her parents deep longing to make sure that she will grow up healed of her defective heart. This year, it was with a mixture of happiness and anxiety when KN told me about Anika’s Cardiac Catheterization at the PHC and that the doctors declared that surgery is very possible for her.

She has to undergo 2 surgeries, first the Glenn Shunt & Pulmonary Reconstruction and next is the Fontan Procedure.  KN and her hubby AA started a campaign to raise the needed funds (Php450,000.00) so that Anika can undergo the required first surgery at the soonest possible time. All of us who love Anika, as well as those who have just been touched by her story, pitched in to help in her parents’ efforts to raise the needed funds. Our collective prayer is that Anika would be able to undergo the first surgery as soon as possible.

…And our prayers were answered! Today is Anika’s 4th birthday and mommy KN happily updated us, just a few hours ago, that they got the best news ever: Anika will undergo surgery at the Children’s Hospital New Orleans, US on April 28, 2011 – FREE of charge! It is indeed a huge blessing for the family – the best birthday gift for the brave little girl!

After this, Anika needs to undergo the next surgery – the Fontan Procedure, which will cost approximately 2 million pesos. As such, our campaign continues – Have a Heart! Help Save Anika’s Heart!
